It Girls have been rocking sling bags for some time now—at least two years, if I had to estimate. I believe it started as a fanny pack worn like a crossbody (innovative), but now there are styles designated to be worn right around the breastplate.
I swore I would never wear one.
My proclamation was out of sheer obstinance, really. I thought I was above the pack mentality. But then came a report from The Lyst citing a $20 Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag as one of the top five bestselling items of 2023 thus far. As a fashion shopping editor, I had no choice. I did what had to be done. I tested the bag. And as much as I had resisted, I love it.
Forever a backpack or plain shoulder bag gal (crossbody bags just aren’t for me), I found that this sling offered security and accessibility my other tried-and-trues could not. Plus, at just over $19, who could resist? It’s also water-repellent, which is ideal for unpredictable rain showers or, more likely, me spilling something on myself.
As for space, I am continually surprised by it. Based on appearance alone, it doesn’t look like much, but it can even hold some of my reusable water bottles and a book along with the usual purse necessities.
It can also be worn in a variety of ways: as a sling around your chest, as a shoulder bag, or as a sling around your back. The adjustable strap makes it easy to go from one to another comfortably.
It’s plain, but in a good way. However, I think it might be difficult to dress up. It certainly isn’t adding any pizzazz to your night-out look, but it’s perfect for an everyday bag. My other complaint is that I suspect it can indeed get dirty and stained. Although I have not tried washing mine, there appears to be a small stain from a lip balm smudge. This may not be an issue depending on which color you select—there are seven to choose from. To optimize versatility, I would recommend going with one of the neutral shades, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them.
