Alessandro Michele is all about maximalism, and his latest collection for Gucci bit off about as much as a person can possibly chew. The Italian house’s resort 2023 collection was an ode to “cosmogonies,” or the theory related to how the universe started—you know, the little things. Looks were inspired by the stars, myths, and constellations. The beauty, of course, followed suit, and Gucci global makeup consultant Thomas de Kluyver wanted to inspire the same feeling of a mystical universe through makeup. “I wanted [to add] some magic and mystery to all of the different looks,” he told ELLE.com immediately after the show. “Everything had a little bit of sparkle and shine.”
And while Gucci beauty has taken cues from different time periods both in the distant future and past—like when the late ’80s inspired the launch of Mascara L’Obscur and Gucci’s spring 2018 show brought us futuristic glitter-meets-Elton John and Bob Mackie—on the runway and in makeup, Kluyver’s aim for resort was timeless. “I think what is so incredible about Alessandro is that he writes all of these references from the past, the future, and everything in between then puts it all together,” he explained. “I wanted to create looks that had that same sort of feeling to them. They were all quite timeless, as opposed to something from any specific point or era at all. The mix of the old and new I think is really, really interesting.”
Kluyver did have a favorite beauty look from the night: a constellation-inspired sparkle. “The beautiful metallic looks really showed up on the runway,” he said. He also proved that even old standbys can come across as totally new when put through the lens of Michele’s Gucci. “I also loved the really bold red lips and blue eyes. [They are] very classic makeup looks, but we gave [them] a real twist.” The twist was most apparent in the color that traveled from the forehead to the cheek, giving the effect of Gucci glam and maximalism, even with blush.
Kluyver also shared the products from his favorite looks below, so you can recreate the magic of the Gucci cosmos at home.
