Here is a niche scenario: You want to sell your beloved Chanel bag to an online resale shop and use the credit to buy, well, another Chanel bag. (Or a Prada. Or Balenciaga. Or Louis Vuitton. We’ll let you dictate the fantasy). The problem is that the timeline of the retailer receiving, verifying, and sending you your money means a delay of at least a week before you get your cold hard re-shopping cash in hand. Chances are, the new purchase you’ve been eyeing will sell out before your credit arrives.

As anyone who shops the vast world of secondhand knows, it’s a cutthroat market where Old Celine and limited-edition Speedys disappear off the shelves as swiftly as they hit them. (Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by websites’ ticking clocks signaling your expiring shopping cart.) By default, participating in a revolving secondhand closet rarely inspires instant gratification. Until now. Rebag, one of our favorite sites for resale luxury, realized this strain some customers were experiencing and responded in kind. Launching today is Clair Trade, a new service that allows you to buy and sell your items in a single, combined transaction. Even better, there are some serious perks involved.

Using the AI-recognition and pricing technology Rebag launched with Clair back in 2019 (think of it as a Kelly Blue Book for designer handbags), Clair Trade not only gives you a quote within seconds but allows you to use your credit toward a new purchase instantly. “Our whole business is based on transparency, which is pretty much the opposite of how the resale industry works,” Charles Gorra, the founder and CEO of Rebag, tells me over Zoom. “We’re going to trust you.”

Don’t violate that trust, though, because if you think you can game the system by under-grading the item you’re selling to buy something under false pretenses, think again. You’ll need to ship your item to Rebag for verification, and if there are any alterations to your original offer, they’ll kindly let you know. It’s only after confirmation—and a potential edit to your sale—does Rebag send you your new-to-you goods.

Now back to the added perks. The joy of shopping resale luxury is a universal truth. You can find an archive Fendi baguette no one else owns or score a Cartier Love bracelet for under-market value. But Rebag’s Clair Trade steepens the designer discounts. For a limited time, Rebag is offering a whopping 25 percent trade-in incentive, meaning you’ll make 25 percent more toward in-store credit compared to the cash value of the sale. And for those who like evading taxes (morally, of course), trade-in values are free in certain states like New York and Florida, meaning you won’t have to pay sales tax on transactions made using Clair Trade as you would with an outright purchase. This fringe benefit varies by state and will be automatically applied to your checkout.

You can personally test Clair Trade online today or visit one of their seven locations nationwide. The program isn’t limited to just handbags, either, but extends to the site’s 15,000 accessories, watches, and more. “With Clair Trade, Rebag is essentially pioneering negative checkout,” Gorra said in a statement. It’s guilt-free shopping at its finest, and fastest.
